Amazon.com Cinderella Man is a wholesome slice of old-fashioned Americana, offering welcomed relief from the shallowness of many summer blockbusters. In dramatizing the legendary Depression-era comeback of impoverished boxer Jim Braddock, director Ron Howard benefits from another superb collaboration with his A Beautiful Mind star Russell Crowe, whose portrayal of Braddock is simultaneously warm, noble, and tenacious without resorting to even the slightest hint of sentimental melodrama. The desperate struggle of the Depression is more keenly felt here than it was in Seabiscuit, and Howard shows its economic impact in ways that strengthen the bonds between Braddock, his supportive wife (Renée Zellweger) and three young children, and his loyal manager (Paul Giamatti); all are forced to make sacrifices leading up to Braddock's title bout against heavyweight champion Max Baer (Craig Bierko) in one of greatest boxing matches in the history of the sport. Boasting the finest production design, cinematography and editing that Hollywood can offer, this is a feel-good film that never begs for your affection; it's just good, classical American filmmaking, brimming with qualities of decency and fortitude that have grown all too rare in the big-studio mainstream. --Jeff Shannon

CINDERELLA MAN is pure fiction but as boxing films go, decent entertainment. In particular, I was really irritated at how inaccurate they made the '35 Baer title fight. In reality, this was no slugfest. Max never looked like a crazed beast during it. Jimmy spent much of the fight circling to his right. Mostly the two boxers clinched and threw ineffective inside uppercuts.
There were no two low blows, no face slap and no moment near the end of Round 15 when Braddock was staggered wth Max closing in for a headshot kill. In reality, Baer lost his zest for headhunting after he killed a man in the ring. Worst of all was the elimination of Baer's Star of David from his trunks. Max was proud of his Jewish heritage and this symbol should've been retained. Political correctness is nonsense, especially when supposedly depicting actual events.
To see the REAL fight in its entirety, check out CINDERELLA MAN: THE JAMES J. BRADDOCK STORY.
Perfect June 17, 2010 asyoulikeit (North Carolina) How often do you get to see a movie where all of the elements come together into sublime mastery? This film is so beautifully directed, so perfectly edited, and so well acted, it borders on majestic.

I did not realoze that this was an HD DVD when I bought it. It arrived in new condition, factory sealed, but since I do not have an HD DVD player, I cannot watch the DVD.
