Well done July 3, 2010 George Ciechanowicz 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Assuming any of its prime target audience (15-35yo) will read it this book makes excellent points about the reality of how dangerous any violent confrontation can be, gives sensible strtegies re dealing with various scenarios and offers examples practical physical techniques while correctly noting that these cannont really be learned from a book and some sustained traing under a good indtructor is a must for those who aspire to use such techniques in reality.
I only wish that just as the authors point out that fighting and combat are different activities they would also promote that self defense is best regarded as another different activity again and the mindset of self defense I would suggest could best be described as keeping oneself safe which is a way different mindset to fighting or combat and encompasses far more than protecting oneself from violence from others.
This Book Can Save Lives! July 1, 2010 Khaled Altaher (Riyadh, NA Saudi Arabia) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
When you read the title of the book for the first time, you get the impression that this book is filled with fighting techiques that are to be applied on the street. It's not like that at all.
The sole purpose of this book is to convince you that fighting is extremely dangerous and has lots of negative consequences. It is dividend into 3 parts: Before the fight, during the fight, and after the fight. Before the fight section covers usually the matters that escalate into a fight. How to de-escalate them and how to be prepared for the fight if you had no other choice. During the fight section covers broad range of practical techniques that could be used on the streets, whether striking or grappling. After the fight covers the consequences of the fight such as 1st aid assistance, law suits, and fueds.
The book is so convincing that it makes you think twice before you ever get into another fight. Every young man must read this book because this would literally save lives.
This book is so good I believe they should me a documentary based on it.
Lawrence Kane and Kris Wilder are two wonderful martial arts authors. All their books are great buys.
pretty good stuff April 29, 2010 Daryl Lestrade (Brooklyn, New York United States) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This book is a very interesting read, its not so much about violence than avoiding it. The majority of the book is spent trying to get you to be aware of the signs to potentially violent situations. there are various pictures of the application of tips included in the book also pictures of the aftermath of different violent situations. Its mostly about Although there are some tips included for those times when running and/or hiding isn't an option. There are also various holds and throws explained in the book along with pictures detailing there application. Overall its a good read and can help keep you aware of the world around you, possibly noticing things that you would have ignored otherwise.
Of major importance! March 19, 2010 shotokita (New Mexico) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
The Little Black Book of Violence is a book that has come at the right time! As a practicing martial artist/teacher in the traditional sense, and an ex-high school teacher, I wish I had this book when I was teaching in the school system. Though it is at times graphic - because it is honest and totally realistic - this book should be read by every young adult so that they can understand the dangers of their actions. Just as important, it should also be read by adults, so that we can once again look back at some of our youthful stupidity and learn something! I've been there, and yes, indulgence in the heroics of pride and testosterone causes stupid things to happen. Luckily, I had a sensei who acted as a conscience, made us think about what it means to hurt someone physically, and the emotional devastation that can plague both victim and perpetrator throughout their lives. This book is about just that. It is a conscience. It is likewise a book of prevention - how to avoid being hurt or hurting others. It also deals with the law, and what can happen should you defend yourself beyond what is necessary. If you only read one book on self defense, this should be the one. The authors know what they're talking about. Read and listen!
A must read for anyone who is serious about their safety February 12, 2010 Joey (Seattle, WA) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Kane and Wilder really made me think about fighting in a way that I never have before. The authors lay out the cost of violence in stark, realistic terms. It is scary stuff, but it ensures that we understand the full ramifications and consequences of violence so that we can make smart decisions about fighting. I got a little queasy reading some of the author's examples and viewing some of their pictures was downright disturbing (thank god they are not in color), but I learned a LOT from the experience. And I know that I am better off for it too.
The title is catchy, but don't let it mislead you. Far from little, it is a weighty tome, almost 400 pages long. And it is packed with invaluable information. There is a non-judgmental survey to fill out before and after reading the book that helps us determine what we are willing to do or not do, and what we are willing to have done to us or a loved one. I really loved that part. It is a fantastic way of sorting out what is worth fighting for and what is not. Such choices cannot rationally be made during an encounter, so we need to think about it ahead of time. This book truly made me think.
I cannot recommend The Little Black Book of Violence highly enough. It is particularly useful for young men and anyone who works with at risk youth such as social workers, teachers, administrators, but to be perfectly honest anyone can benefit from the information. The tone of the book is not aimed at women or older adults, but the material is appropriate for all people of all ages who are serious about self defense.
