Only Female

I'm the only female in an all male gym, and its kind of hard to train with them because they're so much physically stronger. Do you have any tips to help me keep up with them?

Beating up the boys...

I've been in a couple of gyms where there have been only one or two females. It always amazed me how the females were treated exactly like one of the guys - worked out with the guys, sparred with the guys, and were not given any concessions in the ring - and within limits, I think that's the way it should be and I think it made those females all around better boxers. They definitely were stronger and more talented than some of the guys in the gyms. I also think it made the guys work a little harder :)

Ideally, I'd suggest going out and finding a female friend who wants to box and bring them to the gym with you. At least that way, you'll get a break from always having to spar/workout with guys. We tend to be a bit more aggressive than women - but you can also use that to your own advantage - and that's a part of what boxing is all about - playing on your strengths and your opponent's weaknesses. Other options include going out and finding a women's only gym or hiring a trainer to work with you one on one - but I think that takes away some of the benefits of training with people who are better and stronger than you are. It may be hard to keep up with them, but it's better than always being superior to your training partners - if that happens you'll find yourself not pushing as hard and that is always a bad thing.

Even in all guy gyms, there are guys that not as strong as others that end up in the ring together. That's just the way it is and you can either make yourself stronger or you can make yourself faster or you can use strategy to compensate.

Unfortunately, I don't have any magic pill that will suddenly make you stronger - but stick with it. In time, you'll not only earn the respect of the guys for training with them as one of them, but you'll also see yourself getting stronger and faster as well.

Hope that helps.

HI i began attending a ladies

HI i began attending a ladies only class at the local boxing gym in jan this year. Within this class of almost thirty women there were only for off us willing or interesting in sparring. And as one night in the gym isn't much usage if you wish to compete we began going to the mens classes as well.
Fitness and skill wise we were also the best in the female class however in the mens class we were at the bottom of the heap. I had to push hard and dig deep to even try and keep up with the guys. Now in the circuits that we do at the start i am well and truly holding my own and am capable off keeping up with the men.
While its good to have female sparring partners , we are all new and tend to go in too hard alot. I have found that i dont learn much from these sparring sessions.
I find that sparring with the men however helps me learn more on the level of skill required etc.. Yes they are bigger stronger and faster than me , however i like the fact that if i am sparring beyond my current level i can only get better than the level i am currently at.
