Help with Keeping head up

OK here is the deal. I am a south pawed fighter and the guy I was training with is right handed fighter with 4 inches or so of reach. With that in mind my game plan was two fast jabs taking a step forward with each punch and then a left to the body or a straight left to the jaw. This plan works great for a while. Then I get the over hand right to the head that rocks me a little. Then when throwing my jab I notice I drop my head and start getting upper cuts to the face or over hands to the side of my head. Do you have any suggestions/drills that would help me keep my head up?

Hi. You Southpaw dudes are

Hi. You Southpaw dudes are hard to fight, so I am sure you can develop some good strategies against us orthodox fighters.
As for upper cuts regardless of your orientation they all come up the middle so this punch should be guarded at the middle of your head with your back hand or if at your body with your lead hand in a crumple position guarding with the elbow.

Orthodox fighters will try and move to their left and slightly angled to you so they can also jab, against you, they move away from your strong hand and will use their left hook after trying to set things up. This left hook is not the classic in short left hook but is usually a further out hook. Throwing enough left hooks like that will set you up for the overhand right, because like the left hook the orthodox fighter usually moves to the left to throw it.

A good orthodox fighter will wait a long time before they go to their right and if they do it is usually safer to throw a short right or crowd you and a right upper cut.

As for keeping your head up, you really want to keep it down and tucked into your shoulder. I would suggest weaving under the overhand right, by going with the punch and ducking under to your left and countering with a left hook to the body.

You might want to read this (see link)

It's written with "south-paws" in mind.

Just wanted to post a follow

Just wanted to post a follow up. I spent a couple of months getting over being worried about taking a hard punch to the face, worked on my foot work, worked on fighting in a up position and practiced slipping the over hand right. Seems to have worked and now I am back on track.
