Did something stupid - jarred my lower body into discomfort

I'm not sure exactly what caused my hips to feel like they're out of alignment, but I've managed to do something. It could be because of the extra weight I carry or bad form when throwing punches with shadow boxing or punching bag or even moving to dodge the double end bag or maybe jumping rope barefoot on my rug or even all of the above, but I've managed to make something go out of alignment. I think this stresses the importance of watching your form and wearing the right shoes.

or

It's also possible I did this from shoveling a lot snow or like I said, a combination of everything

Form is important

Form is definitely important. Some people swear by it, others think it's useless, but a good stretch after a quick warmup may prevent strains and pulls, as well as a stretch at the end of the workout. There is a lot of twisting going on when you're hitting the bag and a lot of quick movements - if you aren't sufficiently warmed up, you could easily put too much strain on your muscles.

Like you said, proper form will do wonders for you. It's always best to start slow, get the technique right, and then build up the speed and power once you have the movement sorted out. Just jumping in and wailing on the bag isn't the best option.

You've been around the site for a while, so I'm assuming you've been fairly active. If not though, or you've been on an extended layoff, delayed onset muscle soreness could be part of the problem as well.

Rest up, let it heal, and you'll be back in the gym before you know it. Push it too hard and you'll end up with something serious that needs to be checked out. Train smart.
