The 7 Secrets of Boxing Footwork Review

Boxing footwork is the foundation of a successful boxer. Everything stems from the boxer's stance and his or her ability to move fluidly around the ring. All power and technique comes from the legs. All offense and defense originates from the stance. To neglect the importance of footwork is to force yourself on a path to boxing mediocrity.

You can never learn enough about boxing footwork. Even when you think you've mastered all there is to know, you need to keep practising and drilling. That's where "The 7 Secrets of Boxing Footwork" can help.

The Product

The main product itself is a short ebook (26 pages) with links to 10 boxing footwork drills (The Boxing Footwork Drills Series) presented in presentation video format (more on that below). The ebook can be read or an accompanying MP3 version lets you listen to it when it is convenient. In addition, the package also includes another ebook interview with British Olympic Boxing Coach Terry Edwards on the importance of boxing footwork and many of the mistakes that he's seen training these vital skills.

As added bonuses, the package includes two other ebooks - "How to Be an Ace Athlete" and "Sports Supplements".

The Author

The two ebooks were written/compiled by Neill Ryan. I'm not 100% sure how much actual boxing experience Neill has, but the strength of his product lies in his research skills and contacts within the British boxing scene. He has spent countless hours in boxing gyms interviewing top British boxing coaches and boxers and compiled that information (specifically related to boxing footwork) into this training package.

Interview with Olympic Coach Terry Edwards

The boxing experience and expertise in this package is not provided by Neill, but rather by Terry Edwards, top former Olympic boxing coach. Terry led the British team to record breaking success at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and was awarded a MBE at Buckingham Palace for his outstanding achievements. He is "Britain's most successful boxing coach for 56 years" and has been a standard feature on the British boxing scene as shown in this 2008 article printed during workup to the 2008 Olympics.

As an amateur boxing coach and trainer for 22 years and then full time head coach of the Olympic team from 2000-2009, he has been credited with substantial achievements and reforms in the British boxing scene. In short, you can believe what he is saying in this training package.

The Good and The Bad

What I Liked

The 7 Secrets of Boxing Footwork is a very specialized product. It deals almost exclusively with boxing footwork from the most absolute basic starting point. Some people have developed bad habits, bad stances and bad movement abilities and this product aims to take everyone back to the beginning to ensure that foundation is strong.

To that end, the chapters of the short ebook cover 7 basic fundamentals:

  1. The Stance: How to get into it, ensure it is solid, positioning of feet (along with why they are positioned that way).
  2. Movement: How to move in your stance - forward, back, sideways - how to do it properly.
  3. Feet First: An extension to the section on movement that details the importance of your feet leading the charge.
  4. Establishing Range: How to get in and out and put yourself in the best position to attack and retreat.
  5. Changing the Angle of Attack and Retreat: Some more advanced discussion on getting in and out with limited damage by altering how and from where you approach or retreat from your opponent.
  6. The Sidestep: Another footwork technique to put you in better positions.
  7. Generating Power: A vital discussion on where power actually comes from.

The good thing about this package is probably also one of the things many people will consider a weakness - the length. The meat of the product is 26 pages with 10 boxing footwork drills to practice. On the surface, that may not seem like a lot of information for the $47 pricetag, but if you consider the importance boxing footwork plays in your development and the fact that this information is coming from one of the top experts in the industry - you may be able to appreciate the cost.

Like I said, the brevity may be considered a weakness - after all, I'm sure you're asking yourself (I did)are you really getting something for your money? Well, the short ebook is brief but it is also concise. It cuts out any fluff that would pad the product. It doesn't waste your time and just gets straight to the point. I was able to review it all in under an hour.

There really is nothing groundbreaking or earth shattering in this product. As they point out in the ebook - it is not a magic pill that will solve all your footwork problems in 24 hours or your money back. It really just takes you back to footwork fundamentals, teaches you what you need to know, and then gives you some drills that progress in difficulty to practice what is taught.

What I Didn't Like

I was a little disappointed with the 10 boxing drills provided to solidify what is taught. The drills themselves are great and progressive and I even learned a couple new ones (which in my mind was worth the cost), but I was expecting video demonstrations. Instead, they opted to provided video presentations or audio discussion.

You may be wondering what the difference is. In a video demonstration, we would actually watch a boxer do the drill - demonstrating the movements. In a video presentation on the other hand, what we actually get is basically a powerpoint presentation with pictures detailing how to perform a particular drill. In the case of audio - Terry talks us through how to perform the drill.

Is it a showstopper? No, but I think a video demo would make the techniques of the drills much easier to grasp. Each drill comes with a "detailed enough" writeup so I'm sure you'll be able to understand how to perform each. And of course, if something isn't clear - as a customer - you can ask and Terry and Neill would be more than willing to help.

The Verdict

For those of you who feel your footwork may be lacking, this product is useful in taking you back to square one to really focus on what you need to focus on concerning your footwork. It will give you the mistakes to look out for and aim to push you onto the right path so you build a strong foundation in your boxing development.

Like all online boxing products, it will never take the place of a good boxing coach or trainer, but it is added benefit for those trying to learn on their own - especially beginners or those who feel their footwork really sucks. It will give you a few new drills and techniques that you can use as variety in your current training plan. If you have to learn in this manner, then putting your trust in an expert such as Terry Edwards is well worth the pricetag.

That said, don't buy this expecting some type of undiscovered secret that will instantly turn you into a footwork god and better boxer. Also do not expect a product full of glamour and glitz. This is barebones, straight to the point, no fluff, but it will give you some tools that can help with your development -- but like any training, it will take hard work and effort.
