At What Age Did You Turn 100?

written by Aaron - 0 Comments -

I'm currently 34 and I don't consider myself old. Sometime around the age of 29-30, people around me starting blaming their injuries and various calamities on their age. Especially in the gym, it is so common to hear the "my body doesn't respond like it used to" or "it takes me twice as long to recover as it used to in my twenties." I think the day you start considering that age is what is causing your aches and pains is the day you actually do get old.

I wonder at what point these people convinced themselves they were old or worse yet, they took someone else's word for it.

If anyone out there is contemplating opening a boxing club, then don't scoff at the importance of offering a boxing for fitness program.  I know many gym owners that swear by their boxing for fitness curriculum and without it, would not be able to make it financially.  A good, well attended boxing for fitness program will bring new boxers into your gym and fund your endeavours to train amateur boxers.  Eventually, a small percentage of the boxing for fitness crowd will be converted into full fledged amateur boxers once they get a taste for it.  How many will depend on how good your program is.

Age, Politics, and the Boxing Mafia

Last night, I watched two 39 year old boxers on the canvas.  One won simply because his competition let him, the other didn't despite the gruelling effort he made against an opponent 15 years younger.

What does this tell us?  It tells us, that politics and out of the ring strategy matters as much, if not more than what happens in the ring in professional boxing.

Miscellaneous Ramblings 6/4/08

written by Aaron - 0 Comments -
How to Box is going physical. I'm starting the first offline How to Box boxing club where I currently live, thanks to my profession and the facilities I have available. Starting this coming week, 14 members are currently signed up to start classes. Unlike traditional boxing gyms, a How to Box gym will follow an actual curriculum of sorts. I plan on posting the class outlines. If you're thinking of starting a boxing club or gym (maybe to take advantage of the How to Box fight club), then stay tuned. You can follow my progress, see what works and what doesn't and maybe open a successful How to Box club in your location.

Building Your Boxing Team

written by Aaron - 0 Comments -

Part of the appeal of boxing is that it is an individual sport. Ultimately, you excel or not based solely on your own merit - if you suck you lose, if you don't you win. It all comes down to the individual and there is no blaming one's teammates or circumstances for your loss. It is pretty obvious when you hit the canvas that things haven't gone so well for you. Only you can prevent that in the end.

That said, the champion boxer is by no means alone in his or her quest for glory. Let's take a look at who else is involved:

Fit vs Fat - The Obesity Epidemic in Perspective

written by Aaron - 4 Comments -

I don't know about you, but I for one, am sick and tired of hearing about the obesity epidemic - if people want to get fat, then let them get fat, unhealthy and die. It's natural selection at its best. Those of us that give a damn about ourselves shouldn't have to put up with all the whining and complaining and increased taxes and premiums these selfish SOBs are going to cause us when they start having their McDonald's induced heart attacks and insurance covered stomach stapling procedures.

From Weakling to Warrior

written by Aaron - 1 Comment -

So, I walked into a boxing gym. It was exactly as I had imagined - dim lighting, ring in the middle, assorted bags hanging from exposed rafters, smelling of sweat and leather. Bewildered, nervous, and fighting feelings to flee, I looked for the manager while trying to avoid eye contact with the monsters in there smashing their fists against whatever they could.

I was thinking the whole time "Don't look them directly in the eye", as if the other boxers were rabid dogs waiting to tear me apart. I could almost feel them looking at me and saying to one another "more fresh meat."

Is Wii Boxing the Same as Real Boxing?

Will learning to box improve your performance at Wii boxing?

In a nutshell - maybe YES.

As if the thrill of boxing wasn't enough to convince you to take up the sport, now you have the Nintendo Wii to give you that little extra push. (if you can find one) Ever since the Wii showed up and I started seeing Chinese people attempting to box on Youtube, I've been curious as to whether someone with boxing skill would do better than someone with no boxing skill at Wii boxing. You can even buy Wii boxing gloves to make it that much more realistic.
